The quality of disposable protective gloves is essential to make sure you make the right choice and buy protective gloves that meet the specific needs of each professional.

That is why we would like to talk in this article about factors to be considered in order to obtain the finest disposable protective gloves to meet one’s own needs.

First of all, it is important to say that these products represent an indispensable protection tool in many professional and industrial sectors and that there are many different models on the market today, which differ primarily in the material from which they are made.
We have already spoken about the materials used to produce protective gloves in further detail in an dedicated article here on our blog, so we will not dwell on it again here.

What can be added is that certain types of disposable protective gloves can contain talc and powder which help to avoid excessive, uncomfortable sweating of the hands, or they can be smooth and adhere to the skin without any need for any additional additives.

Gloves with/without talc

The powder in the protective gloves is nothing more than cornstarch, which favours perspiration of hands and therefore makes them easy to wear even for many hours, as well as being more comfortable to take off and put back on if one’s hands are either sweaty, damp or not completely dry.

Powder-free disposable protective gloves are now more commonly used than those WITH powder, however, they are the best and most popular choice since, in the long run, the presence of powder can cause intolerances and dermatitis. The use of powder-free protective gloves will not trigger allergic reactions, provided that, in the case of a latex allergy, the choice is made from items made from nitrile.

How can you choose the finest disposable protective gloves?

Now, let’s get to the heart of the matter by giving some advice on which factors to consider when choosing the finest disposable protective gloves.

The weight or thickness of the protective glove

According to the weight/thickness of the protective glove we can evaluate the degree of mechanical resistance of a protective glove. In fact, there is a direct correlation between protective glove strength and protective glove weight, or thickness measured at the finger, palm, or wrist of the glove itself. The most indicative is the thickness at the palm.

WARNING: The thickness of a protective glove can be measured in two ways, and it is always useful to understand the method used:

  • ‘Single wall’ refers to a technique whereby the micrometer is placed inside the protective glove and only one layer is measured,
  • or ‘double wall’, which involves the measurement of both layers.

The two measurements will, of course, lead to different results: in the protective glove technical data sheet, it is essential to check which type of measurement has been performed.

Acceptable Quality Level

This is the index that ensures the quality of the product: It is established by strict sample testing, as it represents a well-defined and normed statistical standard, ranging between 4 and 0.65.

The texture of the protective glove

The texture of the disposable protective glove in terms of its finish It may be smooth, for a better glide; slightly rough, for a better grip; diamond safe, for a better grip; embossed, with a strong hold; micro-textured, intended for precision and aesthetic work; knurled, to prevent objects from slipping out of your hands.

The safety of disposable protective gloves: European standards

To ensure the safety of the wearer, disposable protective gloves must meet the strict conformity requirements set by regulations. These requirements concern compliance with the following standards:
EU Regulation No. 2016/425 that refers to PPEEN 420: 2003 + A1:2009, which defines the general requirements for protective gloves, including their marking, instructions, and size.

EN 374-1: 2016 + A1:2018, which defines performance requirements that define penetration and permeation of chemical products.
EN 374-5: 2016: defines requirements against risks from micro-organisms and viruses.

EN 388:2016+ A1:2008, concerning protection against mechanical hazards.

EU Regulation No. 2017/745 standardising protective glove requirements as Medical Devices and replaces the previous 4-part EN 455.

MOCA standards (regulating protective gloves as Food Contact Materials and Objects) at a European level include EU Regulation Nos. 10/2011 and 1935/2004. In Italy, it is necessary to refer to Ministerial Decree dated 27/03/1973.
